ROBERT BRUCE
Robert Bruce was born in Dundee, Scotland, and after attending the public schools and Harris Academy there, came to Boston in 1890. He attended the Northeastern School of Commerce and Fi- nance and from it holds the B.C.S. and M.C.S. degrees.
After extensive business experience and part-time teaching in the Chandler Secretarial School and the Northeastern School of Com- merce and Finance, he joined the faculty of the latter school in 1918 and the faculty of the College of Business Administration in 1922. Since then he has been Professor of Accounting since 1925, Acting Head of the Department of Industrial Engineering 1941-1942, and Acting Dean of the College of Business Administration 1942-1945. Professor Bruce has thus made his contribution to the life of the Uni- versity and has affected the education and the lives of successive generations of Northeastern students.
It is with humble sincerity that this twenty-seventh volume of the Cauldron is dedicated to Professor Robert Bruce, teacher, philosopher, gentleman, and Mend.

ADVISER TO THE CLASS OF '49
Mr. Edward Marks Cook, adviser to the class of 1949, was graduated cum laude from Harvard University in 1935. Also he has attended Harvard University Graduate School, doing part-time study in astronomy, and Boston University Graduate School. He expects his A.M. in Mathematics later in 1947.
In September, 1938, Mr. Cook became a member of the faculty. A leave of absence was given to him in 1943. For two years
he taught Mathematics in the Army Air Forces Pre-Meteorology training program at Bowdoin College. He then became research associate in theoretical exterior ballistics at the Allegany Ballistics Laboratory of George Washington University at Cumberland, Mary- land.
Mr. Cook is married and resides in Arling- ton with his wife and two children, Edward Marks, Jr., age 3, and Vivian Elizabeth, age 1.

Friday night, September 29, 1944, found the Student Union hosts to the bewildered newcomers. After an evening of entertainment and fellowship the frosh departed, less bewildered and with the knowledge that they were no longer outsiders but a part of the University.
The first fling into the Northeastern social whirl for the new class was a memorable one. This debut took the form of an informal dance held
in the beautiful Crystal Ballroom of the Hotel Kenmore. Purple lights, flowers, and music by Chappie Arnold and his band contributed to social as well as financial success. Rough Going
The Frosh Tilt, held on February 2 in the Com- mons, proved to be the first step toward an empty treasury. So few students attended this game-fesf that virtually everyone who attended took home a prize.
With the coming of spring the politicians, like ground hogs, came out of their holes. The re- sults of an eventful campaign were: Art Cunning- ham, President; George Yee, Vice-President; Fran- ces Myers, Secretary; and George Giroux, Treas- urer. When the administration took over on March 28, one of the planks in the platform to be ful- filled was the campaign to replenish the depleted treasury. The energetic class cabinet took it upon themselves to draw up a class constitution. This was received with applause at one time but was never put into active use.
The last class social affair for some time to come was the formal dance sponsored by the class of 1949. The exclusive Georgian Room of the Hotel Statler was the place, March second was the time, and the music for the evening was supplied by

Burt Edwards orchestra. As all good things at N.U. turn out, the dance was successful socially but a deficit on the treasury reports.
Northeastern's annual Pops night dominated the calendar for May. The usual good time was had by all that attended this exceedingly popular school function.
During the summer holiday Miss Louise Marsh, Adviser to Women, was married to Dr. B. S. Roberts of New York. Miss F. E. Oelschlagel re- placed Mrs. Roberts.
Upperclassmen!
Elections once more dominated the scene in September when Arthur Cunningham was re-elected President and Frances Myers, Secretary. Jim Brown was elected Vice-President and Ira Wolfson, Treas- urer. Due to a call by Uncle Sam another election was held in October. The results were Jim Brown, President; George Giroux, Vice-President; Frances Myers, Secretary; and Eleanor Watts, Treasurer.
Virginia Shattuck, well known co-ed, received the Omega Sigma award given to the outstanding woman student of the year. The award is pre- sented yearly to the woman who is most outstand- ing both in scholastic achievement and in social activities. Marjorie Faunce received this same award the following year.
A day long to be remembered was in March. On this day the ground was broken for the million- dollar Student Center Building. Students who were present will never forget the sight of President Ell working with a shovel, and the excited feeling that something new and wonderful was in the making gripped everyone from that time on.
The coming of May of 1946 brought the revival of the Northeastern University Public Speaking Con-
Dahlstrom Otenti Grey McManus
test. This event, which was discontinued during the war years, is an annual affair that was started in 1921. T. Paul Hodge of the College of Business Administration received first prize with a talk en- titled "The Fear Of Freedom."
Due to the need of more school spirit at old N.U. an organization was formed that would pro- vide the stimulus needed to make some students get out and yell for the team. The Husky Key Society, formerly the Pep Club, was organized in June.
Hot Stuff
Instead of a much needed vacation, the summer of 1946 brought with it Liberal Arts Electives. Al- though electives were not new to many members of the Class of 1949, they were not received with open arms.
On September 25 the cornerstone of the Student Center Building was laid. Speeches by Edward Dana of the Boston Elevated Railway and by President Ell preceded the lowering of the huge stone into place — with which the heaven's opened and the new cornerstone was christened with typical New England weather.
Officers for the last four semesters of Division C proved to be the same. They were all returned vets. Walter Glazer was elected President, Faust Fabio, Vice-President, Robert Ling, Treasurer, and Kenneth Kraemer, Secretary. Both elections were rather hotly contested, and had the usual com- plications.
For the first time in several years the coming of fall meant the football season. A rally at Huntington Field for the first game of the year was sponsored by the Husky Key Society. On September 27, a record crowd of 2500 students turned out to see N.U. win over Springfield, 6 to 0. The season was a good one, considering it was the first since the war.
A tradition was revived on November 1. The Student Council came into prominence with the Football Dance held at the Hotel Continental. Music was furnished by Jerry Mitchell. The players and Coach Johnny Grinnell were introduced to those present.
The Home Stretch
The January graduates seceded but a Civil War was averted by student diplomats. A new class,
49A, was formed and elected officers. Most of these were veterans of other classes who wanted their own senior week and class activities. Richard Grey was voted President, Harry W. Dahlstrom, Vice-President; John L. McManus, Secretary; and Robert Otenti, Treasurer.
To welcome old St. Nick the Junior-Senior semi- formal dance was held on Friday, December 13. Contrary to public suspicion and opinion of the dreaded Friday the 13th, the affair actually didn't lose money. All were pleased and thoroughly amazed!
Mem ones
With the above all squared away this scribe takes to ambling along with reminiscence. There are so many incidents that none of us will forget. In years to come we shall "remember the time when . . ." It is just the little things that count so very much. No one will forget the Wednesday noons we spent at Symphony Hall; the time one convocation was devoted to the swing band — never had you heard such wild applause. The cor- ner in the women's lounge where the "gang" gathered at noon; the veterans who believed them-

selves betrayed by the University because co-eds were in the school; gripes, bantering, all taken with the proverbial grain of salt.
Remember the suppers we made for the Student Union evening meetings. No one ever knew what had been put in them. An integral part of our college days were on Thursday mornings. Chapel services were simple, yet held a deep fellowship and a clearer spiritual insight that will go along with many of us through life.
The Hut in its day was the hangout for many. Also later, after the Hut went out of circulation, the Commons took over. But the Hut was never forgotten . . . juke box and all.
What about the time the P.G.P. pledges had a wide band shaved around their head? Also re- member the wonderful dances at the N.E.Z. house and Mrs. Smith who has been mother away-from- home to so many fellows. She is one woman much respected at Northeastern both by faculty and students.
Just how many of you remember Dean Melvin's
Husky Plus Club? Never will it be forgotten. Con- nie Van Norman lugging those heavy files of names and addresses of many of you fellows who received the News every issue.
I guess one of the most important happenings was the Student Center Building that we saw grow from a field to a magnificent white goddess. One could get rather poetic at such a sight.
Remember how our Senior Week passed with all the usual festivities, topped off with a grand climax of commencement on June 22. That was the biggest thrill of all.
Finis
When all is said and done it seems as though
the last few years have been the roughest yet,
but still there has been some real good smooth
sailing. Northeastern supplied the education and
degree we all sought, and with it we must move
on and make room for our successors. With just
one glance back over our shoulder we do so.
You know, it really was pretty wonderful at that!

The Northeastern Huskies, after a three year war-time imposed absence from grid- iron activities, this year regained their right- ful place in the New England small college football scene. The return introduced to college-coaching circles Johnny Grinnell, Tufts graduate and former coach at Brook- line High School. Assistant coaches included Herb Gallagher and Tony Struski, both pre- war members of the staff, and newcomers, Ecio Luciano and Eddie Aranson, trainer.
The team combined tried and true pre- war performer Bob Otenti, Gale Foster, Bob Mclntyre, Len Erickson, Sid Glick and George Makris with a group of promising freshmen headed by John Conroy, Al Manzo, George Lucas, George Keith and John Nason.
Coach Grinnell's baptism was made more difficult because he was introducing the in- tricate T-formation. This, in addition to such normal obstacles (to Northeastern coaches only) as late classes and practice under lights, makes the record all the more im- pressive.
After a short four-week practice, the sea- son opened at Huntington Field with Spring- field College providing the opposition. The single touchtown came in the second period when Len Erickson blocked a punt on the Gymnasts' 10 yard line and Johnny Nason scooped it up and scampered to paydirt.
The Huskies continued their winning streak by downing the University of Maine, 13-7. On a hot and sunny afternoon the club took advantage of a blocked kick by big Al Manzo, then Gale Foster recovered on the Maine 24 yard line to push over a first- period touchdown. Bob Otenti made the actual score and also added the point after. During the second period a Gale Foster pass to Lucas on the 19 yard line resulted in Lucas carrying the ball through four men and
over the goal line. Maine scored in the sec- ond half on a long pass that was caught in the end zone.
Against Boston University, the third oppo- nent, the Huskies went down to their first defeat. Before a sell-out crowd at Huntington Field they held the Terriers even for the first period; then, the weight of superior reserves took its toll. The final score was B.U. 27, Northeastern 0.
The Huskies again took a beating when they traveled to Maine to play Bates at Lewiston. The final score had Northeastern on the wrong end of a 20-0 count although the team forced Bates to take to the air in order to score.
Northeastern returned to winning ways by downing Tufts, 7-6 at the Oval — the Huskies' first victory in history over Tufts. The Jumbos scored in the first period but from there in were completely outplayed. A Northeastern fumble recovery by Sid Glick set up the score with Johnny Conroy making the touchdown on a wide end sweep which completely fooled the entire Tufts team. Bob Otenti's placement kick was straight and sure.
In the last game of the short season the Huskies suffered a 26-0 defeat at the hands of New Hampshire University in a game played at Durham under miserable weather conditions. As in previous contests the Huskies had control of both the ball and the game during the entire first quarter, but eventually the superior New Hampshire club asserted themselves and put the game away.
The Huskies, after a more than creditable showing of three wins in six games, reluctant- ly returned their equipment to the shelves as all looked forward to next year and an even better record. The losses, from the first team, were Len Erickson at guard, Gale Foster and Bob Otenti in the backfield.

Basketball
By Greg Rice
Giving the home folks something to cheer about, Northeastern's basketball team wound up a so-so 1947 campaign on March 1, at the Johnson Memorial Gymnasium, whipping a fighting Clark University five, by a 63-54 count.
The Huskies broke two strings by nipping Clark — their own two game losing streak, and a three-game consecutive win record of the Scarleteers. Lithe Tony Magliozzi and New Yorker Tom Blair again starred for the Northeastern contingent shooting seventeen and thirteen points respectively.
The Red and Black, coached by Johnny Grinnell, former Tufts star, working his freshman year as basketball mentor at the University, compiled a not too exciting six victory — ten defeat record for the season.
Coach Grinnell began the season with a small squad composed of several pre-war stars. A few of last year's first stringers were sidelined to minor roles as men familiar to Northeastern basketball courts of five and six years ago returned from the war front to the athletic front.
Before the boys got the rust out of their limbs, opponents Tufts, Worcester, and Con- necticut had rung up a three and nothing record, instilling the fear into the hearts of the N.U. fans that the season would be one rout after another for the Husky quintet.
In the following contest, the Grinnell- men displayed fine form in a new fast break system that put the skids under a favored Boston University team on their own home courts. Jim Phillips and little Carlo Scafidi played good ball in this game, with Phillips' shifty passes a great favorite with the fans.
Northeastern dropped their next two games to Maine and M.I.T., before indulging in a mid-season rout of New Hampshire, Colby, and Lowell Textile. Grinnell had forwards
Magliozzi and Phillips of Bob Johnson's passes, and bolstered by Inga Walsh and Tom Blair, the team rolled to the three con- secutive victories. The coach made the full use of his height in this series, with Scafdi and Charley Diehl being the contrast in sub- stitute positions.
Displaying no recognized technique of basketball against Harvard and Connecticut, Northeastern dropped both games. Boston University also gained revenge for the early season setback and won easily in their sec- ond game.
Going down the home stretch, the N.U. squad massacred Bowdoin, and then lost to both Maine and New Hampshire, before winning the fnale from Clark. In the Bow- doin tilt, the Huskies used a wholesale sub- stitution method, with two full fives alter- nating on the courts.
In the game with the Wildcats, Inga Walsh again turned in the top team performance, hitting a sixteen point figure in a losing battle. Northeastern closed the score con- siderably in the last few minutes of play but the rally started too late to turn the defeat into victory.
A fast Maine squad rolled up the largest number of points of the season against the N.U. boys hitting eighty points to the Huskies sixty. From the middle of the first half on, the Bears experienced little trouble in hitting the high point tally.
All in all, Magliozzi was easily the star of the season, followed by Walsh, Blair, Phillips, and Johnson. Walsh was recognized as the most improved squad member. Frank Watts, Charlie Rodenhizer, Charlie Diehl, and Carlo Scafdi turned in fine supporting roles. For his five foot three inch height, Scafdi played an excellent brand of ball in every game.

Northeastern's 1946-47 return to the New England College hockey parade under the tutelage of Coach Herb Gallagher, ended with a six and eight record that saw just about everything happen that possibly could.
The Huskies encountered injuries, ineligi- ble players, lop-sided tilts, outdoor ice too slippery to stand on, a severe lack of goalie talent, and even a forfeiture — all adding up to a most remarkable season.
In their first ice tilt since 1942, the North- eastern pucksters sent a fighting Tufts sextet down to defeat. The home squad looked very good in their first victory but looked not so good in following games against Boston University, Tech, Boston College, and Bow- doin. B.U. and B.C., both contenders for the New England hockey crown, racked up large scores against the Red and Black.
Northeastern finally seemed to get the right combination on the ice as they per- formed mid-season routs of Colby and cap- tured the second Tufts tilt also.
In the following two games, M.I.T. and B.U. repeated their early season performances against the Gallaghermen. B.U. pinned one of the worst defeats of the season on N.U. winning by a 12-5 count. In this game, Jackie Cunha of Northeastern turned in the hat trick, sinking three goals. Bob Barry of Northeastern suffered severe eye injuries from a stick, and temporarily lost the sight of his left eye. Barry regained his vision in a week, happily enough for all parties con- cerned.
One of the best games of the season was the following Holy Cross tilt, which the
Crusaders won 9-4. Northeastern appeared strong in the early periods, but the Cross power was turned loose in the final period to beat the Huskies by a substantial score.
Boston College won the second game from Northeastern 11-2 still looming strong as contenders for the championship with B.U.
With the season's final three games in front of them, Northeastern embarked on a spree on victories and a barrage of goals which sank Colby, Bowdoin, and Fort Devens College in that order.
Colby was walloped by a 9-3 score, with the Huskies sinking six goals in the first period. Carl Westlund, Gabe Connors, Bob Otenti, and Curt Mitchell all combined to give N.U. a really decisive win.
The final score didn't end the game, however, for it was discovered that Otenti, Connors, and Heanue had all graduated from the University the day before the game in a mid-season graduation. The game was forfeited after the Eligibility Committee is- sued a statement declaring mid-season grad- uates ineligible.
Minus their stars, N.U. bopped the Bow- doin Bears in their return game, by an amaz- ing 15-3 count. The Huskies sank four goals in the first period, five in the second, and six in the final period. Jim Bell turned in the hat trick and then some, amassing four tallies.
In the season's finale, N.U. just missed a shutout tripping up Fort Devens 6-1. Jim Reid and Don Kerrivan, as well as Jim Bell and Jackie Cunha turned in their best per- formance of the season as they set down the Mass. Staters.

Cross-Country and Indoor Track by Morton Lurch
Plagued by war-weary leg muscles and unfortunate injuries, the Northeastern cross-country team experi- enced a disappointing season. Led by pre-war star Eddie Parker, lettermen Art Calderaro, Bud Davis, Charlie Billings, and bolstered by Don Kunstler, Dick Johnson and schoolboy cross-country champion Oliver Girouard, things looked bright at the start of the season.
In the first meet, Mass. State won a close 27 to 29 victory on the State course. Parker, though injured during the race, and Kunstler were well among the leaders but the other boys found the hilly course too much for their service-weary legs. In a pentagonal affair at Franklin Park, M. I. T. won handily over Har- vard, Tufts, Northeastern and Holy Cross, in that or- der. Kunstler and Parker were the first two N. U. fin- ishers.
At New Hampshire the following week both Parker and Kunstler aggravated old injuries and were forced to drop out of the race after leading for the first mile. Thus New Hampshire won the meet.
With these keymen incapacitated the Tattonmen lost subsequent meets to Connecticut and Tufts. The disappointing season ended with an eighth place in the New England I. C. A. A. A. championships.
For his brilliant work, in spite of injuries, Eddie Parker was elected captain. Letters were also award- ed to Kunstler, Johnson, Calderaro, Girouard, Davis, and Billings, who carried on after Parker was injured.
Good field event performers and a shortage of good runners best characterize this year's Northeas- tern University track team.
First meet of the season found Northeastern com- peting with New Hampshire and Bates. The score was N. H. 63, N. U. 40, Bates 13. Northeastern could not overcome the triple victory of Boo Morcom of N. H. in the jumping events. Star of the meet for the Tatton- men was Charlie Knowles who took first in the discus
and second in the hammer throw. Del Alberghini in the hurdles, Payson Kenyon in the 1000, Frank McCann in the 600, and Al Nicholson in the shotput, were other first placers for N. U.
Jumping in a classy field of performers, Fred Car- reiro surprised everybody when he took a third place in the Knights of Columbus meet at Boston Garden.
Strong running events gave Tufts a 57-Vj to 41 l/i victory at the Tufts indoor cage. Alberghini took a first in the hurdles and a second in the 300. Only other runners to score well were Payson Kenyon with first in the 1000 and Charlie Billings, second in the two mile. Ever-improving Ernie Bosselman and Warren Willette tied for first in the high jump, while Al Nich- olson and Ray Randolph took first places in shotput and pole vault respectively.
Led by Del Alberghini, who captured both hurdle events, Coach Jerry Tatton's charges won the N. E.- A. A. U. Championships. Al Nicholson, with a 46-foot heave, won the shotput while Fred Caniera took a second in the high jump. Hurdler Lloyd Parker and miler Payson Kenyon added valuable place points to the Northeastern total.
In one of the greatest individual performances in Northeastern track history, "Demon" Delmo Alber- ghini captured first in low hurdles, high hurdles, and 300 while taking second in the dash. Despite these eighteen points by Delmo, the Red and Black lost to Maine 68 to 49. Nicholson, Pistorino and Knowles swept the shotput with Bosselman, Willette, Carreiro, Houghton, and Randolph tying for first in the high jump. Dick Johnson's second place in the mile, Ken- yon's second in the 1000, as well as good perform- ances of McCann, Davis, Georgerian, Crowley, Bill- ings, Kokidko, and Martin showed how the team has progressed and argues well for future track teams at Northeastern.
